Piña Colada – the national drink of Puerto Rico

Where the summery drink was invented is controversially discussed, but it is known, that the origin country of the Piña Colada is Puerto Rico. The Piña Colada was even named the national drink of the country in 1978. Among multiple bartenders that claim to be the inventers of the Piña Colada, the creation of the drink made of rum, coconut and pineapple is also credited to a Caribbean pirate. The origin of the name “Piña Colada” on the other hand is not controversial. The name stems from the Spanish word “piña” for pineapple and the word “cola’r” which means “sieve”, which referred to the chilled and sweetened pineapple juice. Nowadays, according to the International Bartenders Association, the Piña Colada consists of rum, pineapple juice and coconut milk. The SHATLER’s Piña Colada is very close to the original recipe and uses only best rum, fresh pineapple juice and coconut. A lot of bars like to add cream or coconut cream to the cocktail to make it even creamier.
